Dryer Not Working?

Important Information Before Requesting Service

Any issues inside the appliance are not covered under electrical warranty.

This guide will help you quickly check whether the problem is:

A. An electrical issue (covered) or B. An appliance issue (not covered)

Step 1 — Check for Electrical Issues (Covered under Warranty)

  1.  Breaker ON – Make sure the 30A double-pole dryer breaker is fully ON.
  2. Make Sure the Plug is Fully Inserted – Dryer plugs are heavy — ensure it’s pushed firmly and fully into the outlet.
  3. Check for a Tripped GFCI/AFC – If your panel shows a colored “TRIP” indicator on the breaker, reset it.

If all of these look good, the electrical system is likely fine. The next step is to check for appliance issues.

Step 2 — Check for Appliance Issues (NOT Covered under Warranty)

This is the most common cause of the problem. IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE POWER IS OFF ON THE BREAKER FOR THE DRYER BEFORE CONTINUING.

Keep in mind only experienced electrical personnel and licensed electricians should follow the next steps. Shock Squad assumes no liability for these helpful tips, and all electrical work is done at your own risk. If you feel uncertain about completing any of the following steps it is recommended to call a licensed electrician to perform this for you.

1. Unplug the dryer.

Pay attention to whether the dryer plug has 3 or 4 prongs. This will help you troubleshoot issues.

3 Prong Plug – 3 Wires

4 Prong Plug – 4 Wires

2. Remove the small electrical cover plate.

This is what the inside of a 3 prong plug dryer looks like

3. Look for a bonding strap or green screw connecting the neutral to the ground – Many dryers come from the manufacturer this way. This is the issue. If you see this, or you need to replace the plug for your dryer, please contact us below.

Shown below, the white neutral is bonded/connected to the green grounding screw.

Step 3 — Reach out to us with a Warranty Request or Service Call

If you have determined that this is an electrical issue (after step 1) then reach out to us so we can have a licensed electrician come out and investigate the issue.

If this is truly not an electrical issue, the resident will be charged for a service call.
